The atmosphere is relaxed and in keeping with Evans’ quest to take the fine dining experience and to implement it into a golf setting. Weekdays are quieter but the place is packed at weekends with golfers coming and going. In the summer, the roof retracts and the BBQ is fired up to create the perfect space for members and their families. The dining room is deliberately kept separate, at the far end of the complex, a pitching wedge away from the golfers who huddle around the pizza oven or TVs in the spacious Courtyard. “And I’m the worst critic,” he says, smiling. The afternoon teas and steak night dinners are sold out weeks in advance, while Evans claims he has yet to taste a better Sunday lunch. Inside, the decor is light, airy and elegant, like a high-end stately home somewhere in the Mediterranean. The golf club adopts a members and guest-only policy outside of these weeks, but the ground-floor restaurant and terrace are open to the public and have become a destination for diners from all over the region. And it helped to put Centurion on the map. The scene resembled a small music festival rather than a golf event, but it delivered what they set out to achieve. The course agronomy at the Centurion Club will be overseen by Troon Golf, who manage many of the finest golf courses in the world, including Turnberry, The Grove, Troon North and Kapalua, and who are synonymous with the sort of quality, service and attention to detail that the Centurion Club will provide for its members.At the time, Evans had already agreed to host the Asian Tour’s first-ever International Series event in Europe. “We’re just 30 minutes by car from Mayfair and its just 19 minutes by train from King’s Cross to St Albans so we expect a lot of enquiries from Londoners who want a fast escape from the hustle and bustle of City life.”Ĭenturion Club is owned and operated by four partners with Wildish, Pronk and Hendriks all having extensive business backgrounds working in the pharmaceutical, construction and manufacturing industries and Scotsman, Evans, bringing 25 years of experience in golf club management at the likes of Troon Golf Club in Arizona, Dubai Creek, Loch Lomond, Bearwood Lakes, The London Club and most recently Troon Golf Management, where he worked on several prestigious European projects. “We firmly believe that our location will come to be regarded as one of the club’s key strengths,” added Evans. “We have already given guided tours to over 100 potential members from in and around the St Albans area and we have been attracting a lot of interest from further afield with several others having already signed up to visit us from various locations in north and central London. “The initial reaction has been incredible,” said Evans as he met with course architect, Simon Gidman, Chairman, Graham Wildish, and fellow owners, Bert Pronk and André Hendriks, to sign off the finishing touches to the course which meanders over rolling Hertfordshire and measures 7,200-yards from the back tees. “It is a course that will excite and test golfers in equal measure and will be quickly seen as a modern classic,” said the Editor of the top-selling UK golf title. That is a view shared by Golf Monthly Editor, Mike Harris, who was hugely impressed by the course during a recent visit. The new club is due to open on schedule in mid-summer 2013 and Managing Director, Scott Evans, is convinced it will quickly become recognised as one of the premier golf facilities in the south east of England. The Centurion Club near St Albans has been attracting rave reviews since its sales office was opened a couple of weeks ago.Ī large number of prospective members have visited the Club since it started to arrange guided tours and their positive reaction has been mirrored by glowing reviews in some of the UK’s leading consumer golf titles.
